Champions of Kamigawa (CHK) is the first and main set in the new
block, with 306 cards - 88 rares, 88 uncommons, 110 commons, and 20 basic
lands. It begins a brand new storyline on a brand new world - Kamigawa. The
world is based on traditional Japanese culture. The pre-release is on
September 18-19, 2004. CHK will be for sale on October 1st.
CHK brings an enormous influx of new themes, mechanics (keyworded and not),
new twists on old card types, and even a few rules changes.
Bushido
Bushido is a new keyword for an old effect. It reads "Bushido n (When
this blocks or is blocked, it gets +n/+n until end of turn.)"
Colored Mana Symbols Return!
WotC has gone back to printing colored mana symbols on cards, which we can
all appreciate.
Defender and the New Wall Rule
Creature type Wall no longer has any rules attached to it. Instead, Walls
now have a keyword ability called Defender that reads "Defender (This
creature can't attack.)". Previous walls have all been errataed to have
this ability. Ironically, despite introducing this change CHK has zero cards
with the defender keyword.
Discard Templating
WotC also changed their policy on how to word discard effects. The new
wording, which it should have been all along, is "target player discards a
card". No more "chooses and discards" or "discards a card from his or her
hand".
Flip Creatures
Much like the Invasion block split cards, these are actually two different
spells on one card. However, only one side of the card has a mana cost,
mandating that there is only one way to play the card. That side of the card
will have a "flip" trigger, and when that condition is met the card is
rotated 180 degrees and turns into the other spell! All the flip cards
revealed so far have been nonlegendary creatures that transform into
legendary creatures upon meeting a certain condition.
Legends and the New Legend Rule
The major theme of Kamigawa block is going to be legendary permanents.
Creatures, lands, artifacts, and yes, even legendary enchantments. There
will be more than 70 of them in CHK alone!
At the same time, WotC has decided to bring creatures in line with the rest
of the card types, so say goodbye to creature type Legend. Creatures now use
the legendary supertype just like other card types. This means the typeline
for legendary creatures now reads "Legendary Creature - Type". Creature type
Legend has been errataed out of the rules, so old typeless legends such as
Gerrard Capashen or Maraxus of Keld now have a typeline that simply reads
"Legendary Creature". They have no creature types.
But wait, that's not all! The legendary rule itself has changed as well.
Under the new legend rule, whenever a player plays a legendary permanent
that has the same name as one in play, all copies of that permanent are put
into the graveyard instead of just the newest one. Note that they're put
into the graveyard as a state based effect. Being indestructible
won't save them, nor will regeneration or anything else.
New Creature Types
A few old favorites are taking a break in CHK, while a few new types are
stepping up to the plate.
White's iconic race for Kamigawa block will be another anthropomorphic race
called the Kitsune (foxfolk, type Fox). White also gains Samurai as a new
class, apparently a stand-in for Knights and possibly Soldiers.
Blue will also be gaining a new race for Kamigawa block called the Soratami
(type Moonfolk).
Black's iconic race for this block will be the Nezumi (ratfolk, type Rat).
Zombies appear to be on hiatus.
Red's iconic race will be the Akki (type Goblin). Red will be the only color
to retain its supericonic race.
Green's iconic race for this block will be the Orochibito (snakefolk, type
Snake). Kamigawa is an Elf-free plane.
Multicolored races include the Humans and Spirits, who both appear in all
five colors. Additionally, expect a number of Ogres in both red and black.
New Subtypes
Much like creatures and lands, enchantments, instants, and sorceries now
have subtypes. So far, Kamigawa has introduced us to the Shrine subtype of
enchantments and the Arcane subtype of instants and sorceries. These new
subtypes act in the exact same manner as a creature type or land type, and
have no rules text. They merely serve as triggers.
Returning Mechanics
None. Nope, nothing is pulling a cycling this time around. However, take
this opportunity to note that there are both indestructible cards and
Equipment cards in CHK. These two mechanics may have originated in Mirrodin
block, but they are now as much an integral part of the game as
untargetability and Goblins.
Soulshift
Soulshift is a new keyword mechanic. It appears only on creatures of type
Spirit, and states "Soulshift n (When this is put into a graveyard from
play, you may return target Spirit card with converted mana cost n or less
from your graveyard to your hand.)" So far, we've only seen cards with
soulshift 2, but it is highly likely cards with other values will be
printed.
Spirits
Along with legendary creatures, Spirits play a major role in CHK. Although
mechanically type Spirit has no changes, expect a large number of spells and
effects that interact with Spirits.
Vigilance
Vigilance is another old mechanic getting a keyword, only this one is a bit
more prominent. Vigilance reads "Vigilance (Attacking doesn't cause this
creature to tap.)"
There are no gold cards in the set. There are 50 cards of each color and 36
left over for artifacts and nonbasic lands. There are at least 5 legendary
lands.
The spoiler is divided by color (W-U-B-R-G-A-L) and then is sorted
alphabetically.

languages or estimated from pieced-together information, so please excuse
slightly off wordings. Moreover, cards contained herein are rumor; they are
not confirmed officially from Wizards of the Coast, although we always do

Now here's an ability that I like. Yeah, they are
definitely getting complicated, but heck, if you have an arcane card in
your hand, you can cast a spell, without actually casting it..You keep
the spell in your hand, yet get the benefits. I think the power of the
ability depends entirely on the other arcane spells out there. But
heck, a 2 damage burn instant for 2 is certainly reasonable on its own. |

Move Over Savannah Lions, meet Isamaru. The first
no strings-attached, 2/2 for 1 magic has made. No, savannah lions
won't disappear, but likely go hand-in-hand with Isamaru. Sadly,
they made him a legend ...

Yup, these cards look pretty weird. They're the
newest mechanic for MTG, FLIP CARDS. Basicaly, one side is
stronger than the other. You start the card face up based on the
casting cost, aka usually a weaker creature. Then, when a certain
condition is made, voila, FLIP it over and become more powerful.
Check out the first flip card to be revealed.

The newest preview card is a Thief of Hope. Check
out the cool ability, soulshift. It basically is a new kind of
graveyard manipulation. No, its not as powerful as the good old
favorite gravedigger's ability which is more versatile. But, you
are no longer stuck with a 2/2 for 4 gravedigger, making the ability
much better. Basically, better creatures, with a modified
gravedigger ability. In the right deck, I am sure it'll see play.
We'll have to see what support cards get created to exploit it.

The newest preview card is a powerhouse in the right
deck. Yeah, a 4/4 Flyer for 4 aint too shabby. Add him to a
deck of targeting effects and you could dominate. Check out what
Nate Heiss of Wizards put together on the spur for this guy.

Could Kamigawa be the YEAR OF THE RAT. ? Marrow
gnawer not only allow all your rats to be evasionary, but allows you to
virtually double your rats every turn? Start Stocking up on your
rats before this guy gets released.

What a cool card. Its more than just a time walk. Its a
virtual reset button and sure to make a bunch of people take a shot at
breaking it. |

Its a CRAZY Righteousness. Not yet excited, how about
combining it with such cards as fling, Noble Purpose, Instant Creatures
like Simian Grunts, Mega Card Drawing like Greater Good, or even
spikeshot goblin. It only costs 3, and while probably not making
constructed play, it will certainly make many a casual deck and be a
great first pick in draft. |

This guys is ridiculous. And being a dragon, he is pretty cool
to boot. Just when you thought a 5/5 flyer for 6, was good, they
had to go and do something like this. As we read from the
development team, they wanted to make dragons harder to kill.
After all, nothing worse than casting a big dragon only to have it
killed instantly.
You may be able to kill it, but it isn't going down without a fight! |

Well they finally made an ability for creatures that don't tap to
attack. Kind of funny that the bushido ability and vigilance
weren't enough to break this creature. Gosh I hope I open him in
draft! |
