Shards of Alara will be the 47th Magic the Gathering expansion set and is the first of the 3 part block of the same name. The release date is scheduled for October 3rd 2008 . Pre-Release events will be held the weekend of September 20th - 21st 2008.

Never before has the face of MTG looked to be changed so much, so quickly. Wizards of the Coast R&D has been toying with alot of new concepts that will finally see the light of day in their upcoming Fall expansion, Shards of Alara.

For starters, WotC is returning to the traditional 3 set block release schedule of Big Set/Small Set/Small Set. Shards of Alara contains 249 cards and the subsequent sets have 145 apiece. Players have been accustomed to the big set having 300+ cards and this reduction to under 250 will see the set become tighter and more focused on playable cards.

Shards also introduces a new card rarity with Mythic Rares which will have a distribution of 1 per 8 booster packs and will replace the regular rare in the pack. There will be 15 total Mythics in the set with 53 Rares, 60 Uncommons, 101 Commons, and 20 Basic Lands.
